French Film Festival Kolkata 2025 Brings a Grand Cinematic Celebration Bridging France and India

The second edition of the French Film Festival Kolkata, a collaborative initiative by Alliance française du Bengale and Nandan: West Bengal Film Centre, in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Kolkata, was inaugurated with grandeur on February 22, 2025. Following the resounding success of its debut in 2024, this year’s festival embarked on an even more ambitious journey, showcasing over 80 films from both French and Indian cinema. The opening ceremony was an opulent affair that celebrated not only the art of filmmaking but also the profound cultural exchange between two nations rich in cinematic heritage. This expanded edition of the festival aimed to provide an inclusive platform for global filmmakers while deepening the connection between France and India through the universal language of film, reaffirming the festival’s role as a cornerstone of cultural diplomacy and artistic collaboration. With a diverse lineup of films and events, the festival sought to bring together audiences, creators, and industry professionals, offering a vibrant space for dialogue and fostering mutual appreciation of the cinematic traditions from both countries.
Launched as a landmark cultural event, the festival set the stage for a week-long celebration of cinematic brilliance, strengthening the ties between France and India through the powerful medium of film. The opening ceremony saw an enthusiastic gathering of film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and dignitaries, setting an auspicious tone for the days ahead. With its expanded lineup, the festival promises to be a significant cultural event that highlights the evolving nature of international film festivals and the collaborative potential they hold in bridging cultures.

A distinguished lineup of guests graced the inauguration, including renowned Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah, actress and production designer Anasuya Sengupta, actress and film producer Rituparna Sengupta, film director Anubhav Sinha, filmmaker and actor Goutam Ghose, actress Rukmini Maitra, industry veteran and Chief Advisor of the 2nd French Film Festival Pritimoy Chakraborty, and actor-casting director Trishaan Sarkar. Their presence elevated the significance of the event, underscoring the festival’s importance in the cinematic landscape.
The festival’s opening was further dignified by the presence of Didier Talpain, Consul General of France in Kolkata; Nicolas Facino, Director of Alliance française du Bengale and Sharmistha Banerjee, CEO-Nandan said. Their addresses highlighted the festival’s role in fostering cultural dialogue and artistic collaboration between France and India.

With an overwhelming response from attendees, the French Film Festival Kolkata began its second edition on an inspiring note, promising a week-long celebration of thought-provoking storytelling, artistic innovation, and the enduring bond between the two nations through cinema.
Didier Talpain, Consul General of France in Kolkata, noted, “The French Film Festival in Kolkata is a great way to bring France and India closer through cinema. Films help us understand different cultures, and this festival gives people in Kolkata a chance to experience French storytelling. It is also a way to celebrate the strong cultural ties between our countries and encourage new ideas.”

Nicolas Facino, Director of Alliance Française du Bengale and Director of the Festival highlighted, “This festival is a space for cultural exchange through cinema.
