Ms. Doli Biswas’s Quick and Decisive Action in a Mid-Flight Medical Emergency Highlights the Importance of Emergency Preparedness

Kolkata, November 2024: In a display of extraordinary situational leadership and medical expertise, Ms. Doli Biswas, Chief Nursing Officer, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, Kolkata, played a crucial role in responding to a medical emergency mid-flight, potentially saving the life of a passenger in distress. The incident unfolded in a flight from Delhi on November 11th at 2:35 a.m. where Ms. Biswas’s swift and composed actions ensured timely intervention and care for a fellow passenger experiencing serious symptoms.

The medical emergency occurred while the flight was on runway at Delhi T3, IGI Airport. As the plane prepared for takeoff, an announcement alerted passengers of a medical emergency, calling for any healthcare professionals on board to assist. Ms. Biswas, along with two young doctors on board, quickly responded to the call.

Upon reaching the passenger, Ms. Biswas observed that he was sweating profusely, had cold and clammy skin, a feeble pulse, and mild pain in the upper abdomen. The passenger, who was diabetic, reported that his last meal had been several hours earlier, raising concerns of a possible hypoglycemic episode. Ms. Biswas, along with her medical colleagues, administered sugar water and an antacid, bringing initial relief and allowing the plane to continue on its course.

However, before the plane could take off, a second emergency arose as the passenger’s condition worsened, with a faint pulse and further signs of distress. Acting decisively, Ms. Biswas administered sorbitrate sublingually (placed under the tongue for quick absorption), followed by aspirin and clopidogrel – crucial medications in the management of potential heart attacks. She closely monitored the patient’s vitals, noting an improvement in his blood pressure and pulse. Recognizing that the passenger was most likely experiencing a heart attack, Ms. Biswas advised the crew to arrange for immediate medical support upon landing.

Once the aircraft returned to the gate, the passenger was transferred to the care of the airport medical team, accompanied by the grateful acknowledgement of the flight crew and passengers. This marked Ms. Biswas’s first in-flight emergency of this nature, a testament to her leadership, compassion, and dedication to the well-being of others.

Reflecting on the experience Ms. Doli Biswas, Chief Nursing Officer, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, Kolkata said, “I feel privileged to fulfill my duty as a medical professional beyond the walls of Fortis and to extend care to those in need. In moments like these, every second counts, and I’m grateful that I could be of help with the support of the young doctors.”

Mr. Ashish Mukherjee, Facility Director, Fortis Anandapur, Kolkata, commented, “This incident is a testament to Ms. Biswas’s dedication and professional expertise. Her ability to stay calm and composed under intense pressure, while making crucial decisions that directly saved a passenger’s life, embodies the core values of Fortis. Her courage has brought us pride and reinforced our commitment to patient care wherever required.”
