It affects memory, thinking and behaviour. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Typical symptoms include memory loss that disrupts daily life, misplacing items of daily use, poor judgement, losing track of dates, trouble handling money and paying bills, challenges in planning or solving problems, wandering and getting lost sometimes, mood and personality changes like increased anxiety or depression. Alzheimer’s disease usually affects people above the age of 65 years. However, people can be affected even before the age of 65 and it is important to look for genetic causes in these patients.
Alzheimer’s involves complex brain changes that is due to the formation and deposition of abnormal proteins like amyloid plaques or tau tangles. It is important to consult a neurologist for an evaluation. Early diagnosis can lead to better management of the condition.
While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are several medicines that may help treat the disease. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle like regular physical exercise, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and keeping the mind active through learning and solving puzzles can all contribute to brain health.
