Swift Lifesaving Angioplasty at Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital Saves a 73-Year-Old Woman Who Suffered a Massive Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest

Kolkata: A 73-year-old woman with a long-standing history of diabetes and hypertension was rushed to Narayana Health, RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur after experiencing intense chest pain and profuse sweating for over three hours. On arrival, an immediate ECG revealed abnormalities and indicated a massive heart attack with critically low blood pressure, prompting urgent life-saving measures. With the hospital’s state-of-the-art emergency response capabilities, an experienced team led by Dr. Debdatta Majumdar, Consultant – Cardiology (Adult) Narayana Health, RN Tagore Hospital, swung into action. The patient received swift and lifesaving intervention.

According to Dr. Debdatta Majumdar, an echocardiogram confirmed that the heart’s pumping capacity had decreased to 30%, far below the normal 60-65%. “We immediately planned an emergency angioplasty. However, while preparations were underway, the patient experienced sudden cardiac arrest. The hospital’s emergency team quickly initiated Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocols, administering a life-saving shock to restore her heart rhythm,” added Majumdar.

In a critical decision, the RN Tagore Hospital’s medical team decided to place the patient on an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), which helped stabilize her condition before she was shifted to the catheterization lab. Within 10 minutes, an angiogram revealed a 100% blockage in the heart’s main artery (LAD). Doctors performed a successful angioplasty within 30 minutes to open the blocked artery, which led to significant improvement in the patient’s condition.

This lifesaving interventions revealed the importance of quick decision-making and collaboration among the hospital’s emergency and cardiac care teams.

“This case highlights the need for immediate and coordinated care in life-threatening situations. The patient had suffered a massive heart attack followed by an in-hospital cardiac arrest. Thanks to the rapid response of our emergency team, the state-of-the-art infrastructure at Narayana Health, and the timely use of IABP support, we were able to buy critical time for a successful angioplasty, which ultimately saved her life,” said Dr. Majumdar.

Post-surgery, her blood pressure stabilized, and she was transferred to the Critical Care Unit (CCU), where she continued to show signs of improvement. The IABP support was removed the following day, and after three days in the CCU and two more days in the hospital’s ward, she was discharged in a stable condition.

Mr. R. Venketesh, COO, Narayana Health, said, “Swift lifesaving intervention and the remarkable recovery demonstrated our hospital’s commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.
