Choco Lava Cake is also known as molten chocolate cake, and it is believed to have been invented in the late 1980s by two chefs independently – Michael Bras and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who is often credited with making the dessert popular in the United States. It was reported that he served the same at his New York Restaurant in the year 1987. Around the same time, the version created by Michael Bras was introduced in his restaurant in France.
