Kolkata: Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute has successfully launched Eastern India’s first-ever Mobile Vision Van outreach camp, marking a landmark step in taking quality eye-care services directly to underserved and remote communities. The pioneering initiative was inaugurated by Mr. Atin Ghosh, Hon’ble Deputy Mayor of Kolkata, along with Dr. Anupam Bhattacharya, CMOH–2, Basirhat Health District, in the presence of representatives from Cognizant and senior leadership of Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mr. Syed Sajid Hussain, Strategic Business Unit Head & Kolkata Core Committee Head, Cognizant; Mr. Syed Tanvir Hussain, Senior Manager & Kolkata Core Committee Member, Cognizant; Mr. Mrinal Sharma, Senior Director – IT Infrastructure, Cognizant; and Dr. Shibashis Das, Director, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute.
Aligned with the Institute’s long-standing mission of Sight4All, the Mobile Vision Van outreach programme aims to bridge critical gaps in eye-care accessibility by delivering free, on-the-spot vision screening, advanced diagnostics, and eye-health awareness to economically and geographically challenged populations. The initiative underscores Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute’s commitment to preventing avoidable blindness through early detection and timely intervention.
Supported by the Cognizant Foundation and implemented by Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute, the Mobile Vision Van commenced its operations from Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) and is now expanding across Primary Health Centres in the Basirhat Health District. Specially trained medical teams are travelling from village to village, ensuring that quality tertiary eye-care services reach those who need them the most.
The van is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic technology, including a Retinal Imaging Machine, Non-Contact Tonometer, and Digital Auto-Refractometer. The programme places strong emphasis on early detection of Diabetic Retinopathy, glaucoma, and other retina-related disorders through quick, painless, and accurate evaluations.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shibashis Das, Director, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute, said, “The Mobile Vision Van is a powerful step towards inclusive eye care. By taking advanced diagnostics to the community doorstep, we are addressing preventable blindness at its root and reaffirming our commitment to ensuring quality eye care for all, irrespective of location or financial constraints.”
Mr. Atin Ghosh, Hon’ble Deputy Mayor of Kolkata, added, “This initiative sets a new benchmark in community healthcare. The Mobile Vision Van reflects how technology, partnerships, and compassion can come together to create meaningful impact, especially for vulnerable populations.”

With an overwhelming response from beneficiaries and strong community support, Sankara Jyoti Eye Institute continues its mission to deliver accessible, affordable, and community-centric eye-care services, steadfastly advancing the vision of Sight4All.
