Kolkata, 17th November 2024: National Epilepsy Day, observed annually on November 17th, brings attention to the importance of awareness, early diagnosis, and effective treatment for epilepsy. On National Epilepsy Day, experts at Narayana Hospital urge the public to educate themselves about epilepsy and encourage early intervention. Timely diagnosis and a well-structured treatment plan are key to managing the condition and improving the quality of life for patients.

Dr. Amlan Mandal, Senior Consultant and Head of Neurology (DrNB Neurology) at Narayana Hospital, RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, said, “National Epilepsy Day is a reminder of the importance of awareness, early diagnosis, and the compassionate treatment of epilepsy. Epilepsy affects millions, yet, due to stigma and limited knowledge, many individuals hesitate to seek help. With advances in medical care, most epilepsy cases can be managed effectively, allowing individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Early intervention, a well-tailored treatment plan, and consistent support make a critical difference. Let’s work to break the stigma, educate ourselves, and support those affected by epilepsy so they can receive the care they deserve.”

Dr. Arindam Das, Consultant Neurologist at Narayana Hospital, Howrah, added, “Every year, 17th of November is observed as National Epilepsy Day to create awareness about this neurological illness. Though there are various clinical manifestations of the disease, it is mostly manifested by episodes of altered sensorium associated with abnormal movements of limbs, up rolling of eyes, frothing from mouth. It can be life-threatening. So one should not hide the disease, but consult his doctor so that the disease can be effectively treated. After proper work up and effective treatment, most of the cases can be controlled with proper medication. In some cases where medicines are not that effective surgery can have an important role in controlling the disease.”

Narayana Hospital encourages everyone to take a proactive approach towards learning about epilepsy, understanding its symptoms, and helping reduce the stigma for those affected. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, individuals with epilepsy can live healthy and fulfilling lives.
