Kolkata: Narayana Hospital’s advanced multidisciplinary approach saved life a 24-year-old road traffic accident polytrauma victim. Mr. Pranoy Kumar (Changed name) was brought to Narayan Hospital after he met a severe road accident and suffered multiple fractures and injuries. He was initially stabilized at another facility before being referred to Narayana Hospital for advanced care.

Upon arrival at the Emergency Room (ER), though Kumar was conscious, and cooperative, his condition was serious with multiple injuries including suspected head and neck trauma, fractures in both lower limbs, right wrist, and left upper limb, along with bilateral intercostal drains in situ for chest injuries. The hospital’s trauma team, led by experienced orthopedic surgeons and supported by a multidisciplinary team, quickly mobilized to provide him with the best possible care.

After a detailed examination that included CT scans and X-rays, the patient was found to have several fractures: the left shinbone, the smaller bone in the lower leg, the inside and back of the right ankle, the right thighbone, the upper arm bone on the left side, and the right wrist. Given the complexity and severity of his injuries, the team at Narayana Hospital opted for a phased surgical approach.

On May 24, Kumar underwent his first surgical intervention for his leg injuries. On May 29th, 2024, the patient had a second surgery. In this procedure, the broken bone in his left upper arm was fixed using plates and screws, the nerves were checked, and the fracture in his right wrist was stabilized with special wires.

Highlighting the severity and complexity of the case, Dr. Surya Udai Singh, Senior Consultant Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Robotic Knee Replacement, Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Mukhundapur, said, “In a scenario where orthopedic surgeons often face the dilemma of choosing between Early Total Care (ETC) and Damage Control Orthopedics (DCO), our team opted for Early Appropriate Care (EAC). This approach allowed us to stabilize the patient and perform the necessary surgical interventions in a phased manner, ensuring the best possible outcomes while minimizing risks such as hospital-acquired infections and post-operative complications.”

Mr. Kumar was discharged on June 03, 2024 in stable condition after the removal of intercostal drains by the cardiothoracic team. His post-operative recovery has been promising, with significant pain reduction and stable vitals.

“We are thrilled to see Mr. Kumar’s successful recovery, which is a testament to our hospital’s commitment to providing world-class care. Our team’s expertise and dedication have made a significant difference in his life, and we are proud to have been a part of his journey towards recovery” said Mr. R Venkatesh, Group COO, Narayana Health.

“This case highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing complex trauma cases. Our team’s collaborative effort has ensured that Mr. Kumar receives the best possible care, and we are delighted to see him on the path to a full recovery. We remain committed to delivering exceptional patient outcomes through our advanced facilities and skilled medical professionals.” Mr. Abhijit CP, Director, Narayana Hospital, and Corporate Growth Initiatives, Narayana Health (East).
