Liver Cancer Awareness Month: Prioritizing Health and Early Detection

Published:

Kolkata- October marks Liver Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to raise awareness about this often-overlooked disease. Liver cancer is one of the fastest-growing cancers worldwide and increasing awareness can help improve early detection and treatment outcomes. The importance of understanding the signs and symptoms, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and knowing the preventive measures cannot be overstated.

Early detection is key to improving survival rates in liver cancer. Individuals are encouraged to be vigilant about unusual changes in their health. Symptoms that should never be ignored include unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain or swelling, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), and dark urine. If any of these symptoms are observed, it is vital to seek medical attention immediately for further investigation and testing.

Dr. Vivek Mohan Sharma – Consultant – Medical Gastro, Narayana Hospital, RN Tagore Hospita, Mukandapur, said, “Liver cancer is third most common cause of cancer related death globally. For cirrhotic patients it is primary cause of death. Common causes include hepatitis B and C, excessive alcohol intake and Non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Prevention and early detection is critical. My advice on preventing liver cancer is vaccination and treatment of viral hepatitis, prevention of heavy alcohol intake, managing obesity, running surveillance programmes for patients at risk and new tools for early detection.”

Raising awareness about liver cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma is vital. It usually occurs in patients having chronic liver disease (CLD) or cirrhosis and has to be differentiated from other cancers that affect liver secondarily. Usually biopsy is not needed and diagnosis can be made on multiphasic CT or MRI of liver with serum AFP levels. Early detection can make all the difference in a patient’s prognosis. With regular check-ups with screening USG and AFP in patients of CLD, early diagnosis, and the right treatment, liver cancer can be managed more effectively,” said Dr. Vivek Agarwala, Director, Medical Oncology & Hemat Oncology, Narayana Hospital, Howrah . “A healthy lifestyle, combined with regular screenings, is the best defense against liver cancer.

Living a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of liver cancer. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential for overall health. Regular physical activity helps manage a healthy weight and supports liver function. Limiting alcohol consumption, avoiding smoking, and protecting oneself from viral infections, such as hepatitis B and C, are crucial preventive measures. Additionally, practicing stress management techniques, such as mindfulness and relaxation, can have a positive impact on overall well-being.

Prevention begins with awareness and proactive health management. Regular medical check-ups, including liver function tests, can help in the early detection of liver abnormalities. Individuals with a family history of liver disease or other risk factors should consult their healthcare provider about personalized screening plans.

Advancements in medical technology have improved treatment options for liver cancer, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. It is essential for patients to discuss their treatment options with their healthcare team to determine the best course of action.

Liver Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity for individuals to take control of their health by prioritizing early detection and adopting preventive measures. Together, we can combat liver cancer and promote a healthier future.
