Dakshini Prayas Organises Free Eye Check-up Camp to Mark World Sight Day 2026

KOLKATA: Dakshini Prayas observed World Sight Day 2026 by organising a free eye check-up camp for its students under the Sight for Kids initiative of Lions District. The camp was conducted by the Lions Club of North Femina under the supervision of its Treasurer Ms. Anupama Prakash, with the objective of promoting preventive eye care, early detection and awareness about vision health among children.

The camp focused on the importance of identifying vision-related concerns at an early stage, particularly among school-going children. Undetected vision problems can affect a child’s concentration, classroom participation, learning ability and overall development. Students were provided with eye screening and guidance on maintaining healthy vision and seeking timely professional advice.

Two doctors were present during the camp to support the screening process, including Dr. Mumtaz Begum, Optometrist, who conducted eye examinations and interacted with the students. The medical team also sensitised the children about the importance of regular eye check-ups and maintaining healthy habits to protect their vision.

The programme also highlighted growing concerns around children’s eye health in the digital age. With increasing exposure to mobile phones, televisions, computers and other digital devices, students were encouraged to adopt responsible screen habits, take adequate breaks and pay attention to any changes or difficulties in their vision.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Mita Mitra, Principal, Dakshini Prayas School, said, “On the occasion of World Sight Day, we organised a comprehensive eye screening camp for our students. At Dakshini Prayas, holistic healthcare is a continuous commitment. We conduct regular health check-ups and run a weekly clinic for our students and their families throughout the year. We have observed a concerning rise in vision issues among young children, primarily driven by nutritional gaps and excessive screen time on mobile phones and televisions. To address these challenges, we provide daily vitamin supplements to all students from Playgroup to Class 10, along with consistent medical guidance.”

She further emphasised that healthcare awareness, proper nutrition and regular monitoring are integral to children’s overall development. The school continues to undertake initiatives aimed at supporting the health and well-being of its students and their families.

The Sight for Kids initiative provided an important platform to bring preventive eye care closer to children. The participation of the Lions Club of North Femina also highlighted the role of community organisations in supporting healthcare initiatives at the school level.

The eye check-up camp reinforced the importance of regular screening, timely consultation, balanced nutrition, adequate rest and healthier digital habits. Through such initiatives, Dakshini Prayas continues to promote a health-conscious environment where children’s physical well-being receives attention alongside their education and holistic development.
