1st October’26, Kolkata: A Basic Life Support (BLS) training session was conducted at Bhowanipore Global Campus, B.L. Shah Road, Kolkata, with the participation of more than 120 students. The interactive session focused on equipping young participants with essential lifesaving skills and creating awareness about the importance of timely intervention during cardiac and other medical emergencies.
The training introduced students to the fundamentals of responding to emergencies, including recognising signs of a cardiac emergency, seeking immediate medical assistance and initiating basic lifesaving measures while professional help is on the way. Such awareness can play an important role in improving the chances of timely intervention during the critical first few minutes of an emergency.
The BLS session was followed by a health awareness talk by Dr Joy Saibal Shome, Senior Consultant – Cardiology & Head, TAVR/TAVI, who spoke about the growing importance of preventive healthcare, cardiovascular health and early detection of lifestyle-related health risks among young people.

Addressing the students, Dr Joy Saibal Shome said, “Cardiovascular health is influenced by our habits and health choices much earlier than we often realise. Preventive healthcare is not only about undergoing medical tests when a problem develops, but also about understanding risk factors, maintaining an active lifestyle, eating mindfully and recognising warning signs early. At the same time, knowing basic life-support skills can help a bystander respond appropriately during a medical emergency. Creating this awareness among young people can help build a more health-conscious and emergency-ready community. It was ”
The session also highlighted the importance of developing a culture of health awareness among young adults, particularly at a time when sedentary lifestyles, stress, unhealthy dietary patterns and other modifiable risk factors are increasingly becoming relevant to cardiovascular and metabolic health.
The initiative brought together two important aspects of community health — being prepared to respond to an emergency and taking steps to prevent health problems before they become serious.

By introducing students to basic emergency response as well as preventive health practices, the session aimed to encourage informed and responsible health behaviour among the younger generation.
