Kolkata, December 11, 2024: Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata 2024, the World’s first World Athletic Gold Label Race today outlined arrangements for race day Sunday, 15th December, including on-course, in-stadia, and medical facilities, for the benefit of the participants. TSW 25K Kolkata one of the biggest running festivals in India, will witness a staggering 20,537 runners taking part in the iconic event.
Present on occasion were Debasish Kumar MLA & MMIC-KMC; Dr. Sanjukta Dutta, Medical Director and Head of Emergency, Fortis; P N Sankaran, Director, Operations, Procam International; Sanjoy Kumar Chakraborty, DC-2, South, Kolkata Police; Hugh Jones, Race Director; Col. Abhishek Prakash, Bengal Sub-Area, Indian Army; Kamal Kumar Maitra, Secretary, West Bengal Athletic Association; Prasanta Saha, Regional Director, Procam International and Vivek Singh, Jt. MD, Procam International.
Speaking about the race and the course, Hugh Jones, Race Director, said, “We started with very low numbers here in Kolkata compared to other venues in India, but it has grown significantly in recent years, with over 20,000 runners actively participating and many more lining the streets. The city recognizes the importance of the image that runners project, and the event becomes bigger and better every year. This year marks a milestone as we achieve gold status, a true recognition of how far we’ve come. It’s a testament to the spirit of Kolkata and the growing enthusiasm for running and fitness in the community.”
Debasish Kumar MLA & MMIC-KMC feels “Since its inception, we have proudly extended our support to the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata. Events like these make our city more vibrant, and it’s a pleasure to see this year’s enrolment surpassing 20,000 participants, compared to just 4,000 in the beginning. This remarkable growth is a testament to its success. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the organizers, especially Tata Steel and Procam International, for their outstanding efforts.”
Speaking about the medical facilities and the safety of the runners, Dr Sanjukta Dutta, Medical Director and Head of Emergency, Fortis, said, “I am privileged to be a part of this iconic event. We are here to make sure all runners are safe. As a sportsperson, during the event it’s crucial to assess whether someone requires an ICU ambulance or can be treated in the medical sector. A doctor is best equipped to make that decision and provide immediate care on the spot. They carry essential tools for preliminary management and can stabilize the person if they collapse or need support. If the situation is critical, they will either call an ambulance or refer the patient to the nearest medical center.”
Vivek Singh, Jt. MD, Procam International, said, “Not only have we put Calcutta on the world athletics map, but we’ve also put a star next to it, making it shine. Unlike spectator sports, where 22 players perform and 20,000 cheer, this is participatory—a sport where over 20,000 run and dedicate months of blood, sweat, and tears to earn their place on the start line. This event reflects Kolkata’s sporting spirit, serving as a platform for inspiration in health, fitness, charity, pride, and unity. Beyond elite races, TATA steel world 25k Marathon, celebrates everyday people transforming their lives and society. With no waste going to landfills, over 400 senior police officers participating, and the Indian Army playing a pivotal role, it’s a collective effort showcasing teamwork and the spirit of being more than oneself.”
