Kolkata: Child in Need Institute (CINI), one of India’s leading non-governmental organisations working for child and maternal health, inaugurated the Shubhayu Health and Wellness Centre at the southern fringe of Kolkata. The initiative aims to strengthen preventive healthcare services for mothers, children, and adolescents in response to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases. The inauguration took place at CINI’s head office in Pailan, Kolkata.
The programme was attended by Shri Dilip Mondal, Hon’ble Minister of State, Department of Transport, Government of West Bengal, who joined the event as the Special Guest. Addressing the gathering before inaugurating the centre, he said, “CINI has identified a cause that will become extremely important in the next ten years. Addressing non-communicable diseases today shows the organisation’s foresight, and that is what makes CINI unique.” He later inaugurated the Shubhayu Centre and visited its various sections.
Dr Samir Chaudhuri, Founder-Secretary of CINI, highlighted the vision behind the initiative. “The idea of Shubhayu is to fight and prevent non-communicable diseases. Today, mobile phones have become a catalyst affecting both social and physical health, often leading to deterioration in overall well-being. Through Shubhayu, we aim to counter this stagnation and encourage healthier lifestyles,” he noted.
The event began with an address by Dr Indrani Bhattacharyya, CEO of CINI, who emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare. “Taking care of our own health ensures that we can help maintain the well-being of those around us. Our Thursday clinic has already benefited many women and children—people visiting Pailan for their daily needs also access the clinic, making healthcare services more accessible to the community,” she said.
Positioned as a structured response to emerging health risks arising from rapid urbanisation, lifestyle changes, mental stress, shifting dietary habits and environmental pollution, the Shubhayu Health and Wellness Centre will offer dedicated services in areas such as mental well-being, weight management, nutrition counselling and maternal care. The initiative reinforces CINI’s continued commitment to community-based preventive healthcare for over half a century.
