Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, implants CRT-D device in a 38-year-old farmer from Burdwan

Burdwan, 19 June 2025: Timely intervention and advanced medical care can make a remarkable life-saving intervention. According to recent research by the Cardiological Society of India, over 40% of cardiac patients in tier-2 and rural areas are not intervened timely and always gets referred for complex care only after their condition worsens. Manipal Hospitals, one of the largest healthcare networks in India, saved the life of a 38-year-old male farmer patient from Burdwan. The patient was initially reported with severe chest pain at Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, under the supervision of Dr. Sumanta Chatterjee, Consultant Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria. The ECG test result showed that he had an acute heart attack called AWMI – Anterior Wall Myocardial Infarction (a condition where a major part of the heart stops receiving blood due to a blockage), and his heart’s ability to pump blood was dangerously low at about 30% of normal capacity.

He was immediately taken to the Cath Lab, where an angiogram revealed that a major artery supplying blood to the heart, called the Left Anterior Descending artery (LAD), was completely blocked. A stent was successfully placed, restoring blood flow to his heart. After the procedure, he recovered well, and his heart function started to improve slightly. He was discharged within 3 days and showed no signs of chest pain. However, during follow-up visits over the next 3 months, the patient continued to experience shortness of breath during mild activity, occasional breathing difficulty that wakes a person up at night, called PND – Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea, and again on ECG, the result was that his heart’s electrical signals were not coordinating properly. Despite initial improvements, his heart function remained low.

Immediately, Dr. Chatterjee and his team decided to implant a CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Device with Defibrillator) device. This specialized device helps improve heart function, preventing sudden cardiac death. It also recovers the heartbeat more efficiently by correcting the timing of its electrical signals and provides life-saving shock therapy if a dangerous rhythm is detected. The procedure was a success. Within a few weeks, the patient’s heart function improved to 45%, and he reported feeling significantly better. Today, he is back on his farm, working and living life with renewed energy and hope.

While explaining the case, Dr. Sumanta Chatterjee, Consultant Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, said, “When the patient first arrived, he was at high risk of heart failure — his condition could have cost him not just his health, but his livelihood. Through a combination of swift emergency care and advanced cardiac device therapy, we did not just save a life — we restored his ability to live it fully. This is the power of modern cardiology, and at Manipal Hospitals, this is the impact we strive to make every day.”

The patient stated, “I thought my life and work had come to an end the day I felt that unbearable pain in my chest. As a farmer, my strength is everything for my land, my family, and my dignity. Manipal Hospitals gave me a second chance. From barely being able to breathe to now walking in my fields again, I feel like I’ve been reborn. I will forever be grateful to the doctors who brought me back to life, not just for myself, but for my family who depend on me.”
