84 teams from 58 schools competed in a constitutional law challenge at Future Foundation School, strengthening legal reasoning, advocacy and courtroom skills
Kolkata, July 24, 2026: The fifth National Inter-School Moot Court Competition, organised by BML Munjal University (BMU) and hosted by The Future Foundation School in Kolkata, brought together school teams to debate one of the most pressing constitutional questions of the digital age: how AI-driven surveillance intersects with privacy, liberty and democratic rights.
The event saw participation from 84 teams from 58 prominent schools across India, where students from cities including Kolkata, Asansol, Dhanbad, Guwahati, Surat, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Gaya and Chennai participated in legal research, advocacy and simulated courtroom proceedings.
After a series of closely contested rounds, Ashok Hall Girls Higher Secondary School, Kolkata emerged as the winner, while The BSS School, Kolkata secured the first runner-up position. Delhi Public School, Howrah and Asansol North Point School, Asansol were declared the second and third runners-up, respectively. The Most Promising Team recognition was jointly awarded to Tashi Namgyal Academy, Gangtok, Sikkim and Vivekananda Mission School, Joka, Kolkata.
This year’s proposition examined constitutional questions around AI-enabled surveillance, privacy and civil liberties through a fictional republic modelled on India’s Constitution. Participants argued issues relating to Articles 14, 19 and 21 while debating algorithmic accountability and state surveillance. The competition reflects the emphasis on experiential learning at BMU, exposing students to courtroom practice well before they enter formal legal education.
The competition was judged by a six-member panel from BMU’s School of Law, comprising faculty members with academic backgrounds from institutions including the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Melbourne Law School, the National University of Singapore and leading National Law Universities in India, bringing the rigour of appellate advocacy to the competition. Teams were evaluated on research, articulation, legal interpretation and their ability to respond to questions from the bench.

Moreover, participating students return with more than academic achievements by getting a chance to actively interact with peers from other schools and to also think through the big questions of our time in concert. First organised in January 2023, the National Inter-School Moot Court Competition has evolved into a national platform introducing school students to legal reasoning and advocacy. With participation from schools across the country, the fifth edition further strengthened its position as one of India’s largest National Inter-School Moot Court Competition, while reinforcing the value of research, informed argument and responsible engagement with contemporary legal questions.
As debates around AI, digital governance, privacy and civil liberties become increasingly central to public discourse, initiatives like the National Inter-School Moot Court Competition provide students an early opportunity to engage with complex legal issues through research, advocacy and informed debate.
