Kolkata, April 7, 2025: An extraordinary choice made by a family put in a moment of insurmountable grief into a beacon of courage, compassion, and spirit. A 15-year-old girl was admitted at CMRI on March 28 at 2 pm and was declared brain dead on April 4. As part of a gesture that moved an entire city, her family chose to donate her organs- making their personal tragedy into a gift of life for others.
It mobilised hospitals across Kolkata into a common mission to pay tribute to her memory by giving others a second chance at life. This was done following the law of the land. Her organs were properly allocated, so that her aura would continue to live in those whose lives she has saved.
At CMRI, the young girl was paid the respect of a guard of honour, which was a somber tribute to her and to the brave family that chose to see light in the darkest hour. Doctors, nurses and staff stood silently saluting her-not as a donor, but as a hero.
“This young girl has taught us the purest form of sharing in her passing-the gift of life,” said Mr. Sombrata Roy, Unit Head of CMRI Hospital. “Her courage and strength of her family will be etched in our hearts. She is not just a donor; she is a light for humanity, a symbol of selflessness that will inspire generations.”
In a world that is otherwise divided with differences, such stories show that the biggest impact comes from love and compassion. Sometimes it even means learning to help others with the loss. The legacy of the young girl will continue living in the hearts and lives of many.
